Fort Myers enjoys a dynamic new relationship with the Caloosahatchee River, thanks to a redevelopment strategy that is helping to revitalize the city's River District. SmithGroupJJR worked side-by-side with the city, developer, consultant team and community to establish a vision for reconnecting Fort Myers' historic downtown to the waterfront while attracting new private investment, residents, and visitors.
The plan strikes a dynamic balance between public waterfront access and economic redevelopment. A contiguous riverfront park is integrated with conference center expansion, a new companion hotel, mixed-used development, and multiple waterfront venues and restaurants.
The plan allowed the city to move quickly to implement a catalytic phase-one project. SmithGroupJJR helped design two large basins providing innovative stormwater management and a distinctive urban design feature around which future River District redevelopment will occur.
