Historically a commuter campus, Indiana University Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI) was experiencing record growth in student enrollment with limited expansion opportunities in downtown Indianapolis. SmithGroupJJR's plan defines a dynamic transition to a more integrated urban campus.
The campus master plan effectively weaves IUPUI into the downtown fabric. Traffic calming and two-way street conversions create a safer, more walkable atmosphere, while new infill development—including 2,500 units of on-campus housing—enhance residential life . Energy and water-use modeling provide strategies to significantly reduce IUPUI's carbon/water footprint.
IUPUI and Indiana University Health jointly provided health sciences education, research, and clinical care through five professional schools and three hospitals across multiple districts, yet their strategic master planning had always remained separate. SmithGroupJJR realized their combined potential with an integrated campus/facility master plan for a downtown Academic Medical Center. The seamless, unified health campus will add 4.3 million square feet of new capacity over the next two decades.
