"I enjoy physical transformations-turning ideas into reality," explains Doug. "Landscape architecture and planning offer a large, integrated canvas on which to paint.” As leader of SmithGroupJJR's Campus Planning practice, Doug's canvas is the academic environment. He is pleased to note he has lived in three great university towns: Madison, State College and, currently, Ann Arbor. Doug focuses his talents, enthusiasm and substantial energy on master plans for public, private and community college campuses throughout the U.S. "I enjoy the camaraderie and team engagement. Plus our clients provide really interesting challenges,” he says. "It's a perfect mixture for me.” He actively participates in the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP), having served on the North Central Regional Council, and the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). Doug is also drawn to the challenge of designing and making furniture-another way of turning ideas into reality.
