This award-winning, five-story glass and copper structure claimed not only critical interest when it opened but it also met an aggressive schedule through integrated project delivery (IPD) with partner DPR Construction. The catalyst for the expansion was rapid growth at Arizona State University at a new downtown Phoenix campus, which made way for a larger College of Nursing and Health Innovation.

SmithGroup's design solution supports healthcare learning and research for more than 3,000 students while delicately balancing the needs of a multi-pronged client structure. The City of Phoenix -- which owns and leases the building -- envisaged an urban gesture that would add character to an evolving downtown core. The university saw the opportunity for an elegant icon to draw attention and students, but it also focused on a tight budget and very short, 18-month schedule.
