Building Design+Construction’s John Caulfield recently spoke with mechanical engineer Stet Sanborn about a groundbreaking new software helping to drive energy efficiency in the built environment. In the article, they discuss SmithGroup’s partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, whose Automated Building Energy Modeling (AutoBEM) software suite can run more than 200,000 energy models in an hour.

"AutoBEM’s information was used to train an artificial intelligence tool that will allow SmithGroup to pre-simulate the energy impact of every design possibility for any building."
