Outstanding Sports Facility
Promoting social interaction tied to campus activities is increasingly seen as beneficial to student performance, recruiting and retention. SmithGroupJJR's challenge for this fitness complex was to offer UT-Pan American – largely a commuter school – with a new reason and place to gather outside of its classes. For socializing as much as for exercise, the sports complex is also intended to promote healthy living throughout the student body.
SmithGroupJJR responded with a magnetic design and program beyond what the project demanded. The dramatic architecture has taken on an iconic presence, sited on a prominent corner of the campus where it doubles as an inviting new gateway. Outside, a leisure pool, basketball courts and sand volleyball courts take advantage of the sunny southern exposure and the facade's playful geometry.
Inside, the facility is equipped with an array of lounge areas alongside recreation zones including gymnasiums, racquetball courts, a climbing wall and a track encircling a two-story fitness facility. Expansive glass walls offer a clear, welcoming view of the activities and amenities inside, and the vaulted spaces fill the interiors with sunlight.
