“We're creating healing spaces for veterans in state-of-the-art buildings that improve efficiency and flow.”

—Lisa Freeman, VA Palo Alto Executive Director

Description

SmithGroupJJR has been working with VA Palo Alto for more than 25 years, providing myriad services that support their mission of care of our nation’s veterans.

The latest projects, including a 325,000-square-foot outpatient clinic building and an 85,000-square-foot research center, are being developed as part of a complex, multi-tiered master plan. The long-term plan covers operations, a future site, prescriptive development guidelines, and an in-depth study of materials management for the 95-acre campus.

SmithGroupJJR’s multidisciplinary team has designed coherent, thoughtful plans for both the interior and exterior of the ambulatory care center. A canopy of protective trees welcomes patients where natural light fills much of the lobby and interior. The use of natural and sustainable materials, such as wood and stone, provide a natural counterpoint to the glass and metal enclosing the lobby. Wayfinding needs for the sensory impaired are carefully integrated into all signage and interior design elements.

Veterans returning home from war with multiple injuries will be welcomed and treated in a facility designed with both precision and compassion.
