SmithGroupJJR was eager to redesign its own Washington, DC office to accommodate today’s more mobile and collaborative work styles. It wanted to create an environment that reflected the firm’s culture and values of creativity and sustainability, while also allowing for local design individuality. The new space would embody the essence of the firm’s “workplace of the future” philosophy, and would serve as a model for future renovations of other SmithGroupJJR offices.
The firm occupies four floors in an eight-story office building. The first floor comprises conference rooms, an open living room, and a café. Above, open workstations and team spaces replace private offices and cubicles, all with an abundance of natural light. These adaptive gathering areas are located throughout the office—never more than 20 feet away—leading to increased opportunities for staff interaction. Floor-to-ceiling windows, local art and outdoor spaces (including a 2,000-square-foot private patio and shared rooftop deck with views of the National Mall) add to the bright, dynamic environment. The firm reused more than 70 percent of the materials from the deconstruction; the new office is LEED-CI Platinum certified, within a LEED-CS Gold certified building also designed by SmithGroupJJR.
