A headquarters is a visual statement of a company’s culture. Designed to accommodate expansion and maintain its North American operations, Japanese pharmaceutical company Astellas Pharma seized the opportunity to reflect a forward-thinking philosophy in its new facilities.
Beyond a modern workplace environment for 1,800 global development, administrative, and sales and marketing employees, the new headquarters boasts modern conveniences: a fitness center, full-service cafeteria and a 20,000-square-foot meeting center. Within the conference hub, a 22-foot-high, multi-media "Heritage Wall" speaks to the firm's legacy, commitment to society and long-term goals. Mindful of its external impression, Astellas was sensitive to unnecessary design elements. Despite budget cuts following the 2011 tsunami in Japan, the environment presents their brand and innovative spirit in a timeless palette.
Representing the largest office development in Chicago-area during the down economy, a collaborative team was paramount to deliver a trophy project. SmithGroupJJR led the interior architecture, influencing the exterior envelope in partnership with base building Architect of Record Goettsch Partners.
