MGM National Harbor Resort is an ambitious project with an ambitious construction timeline. Located on the shores of the Potomac River just south of Washington, DC, the one-million-square-foot resort includes a 300-room luxury hotel, vast casino with 3,600 slots and 140 table games, a 3,000-seat theater, conference center, retail and restaurants. Preliminary massing was already complete when SmithGroupJJR began its preliminary energy analysis.
SmithGroupJJR moved forward to create models and analyze the building as designed, focusing on areas where performance gains could still be made without compromising the construction schedule or budget. The work revealed a great deal of insight about expected energy consumption. The team then was able to identify and optimize different building glazing types and analyze shading devices in order to improve performance and reduce energy costs. SmithGroupJJR, architect of record, is managing over 40 consultants including design architect HKS, Inc. The project is LEED Gold Certified.
