The directive was clear: Bowman and Brooke didn't want to look like a typical law firm. They wanted a new environment that was anything but dark, somber, ponderous or heavy—or “cave-like," as employees called their previous offices.
The new LEED-certified, three-story practice headquarters by SmithGroupJJR met the mark. Even more so, the bold and unique space helped reinforce their image as a firm of choice for a range of clients while underscoring their role as stewards of the environment. Private offices hug the perimeter with full-height, three-foot-wide sidelights, allowing natural light into circulation space. Open workstations at the windows provide exterior views from all corridors, while shared spaces—including the library, main conference room and employee café—are glass-enclosed, adding to the overall sense of transparency. A three-level stair provides a dramatic centerpiece and acts as a connecting spine linking all floors in a casually elegant manner.
