“Now that it's completed, no one could have fully appreciated the way Lakeland College's new front entrance would dramatically change the campus.”

—Lakeland College 2011 Annual Report

Description

With a rich history dating back to the 1860s, Lakeland College selected SmithGroupJJR to complete its first-ever comprehensive master plan. Following completion of the plan, the firm designed and helped implement a key project that has transformed campus identity.

The master plan incorporated space planning, facility assessment, and design guidelines to shape future campus growth and development. The Boldt Company, a construction contractor, was included on the planning team. This led to a seamless, design/build transition to Lakeland College’s priority project: reinventing the main entry and arrival experience.

The highly interactive design process utilized 3-D renderings. The imagery also supported a fundraising campaign that ultimately covered all of the project costs. As an integrated part of the design, the project transformed a drainage ditch along the main entry road into an ecologically healthy stream that mitigates stormwater flooding problems. Visitors now enter campus via a stone bridge over a beautifully restored stream – an experience that impresses prospective students and alumni alike.
