Private hospital rooms are no luxury. Patients in private rooms not only have better outcomes but also benefit from the reduced likelihood of infection transmission. Holy Cross Hospital once again engaged SmithGroupJJR to help embrace this new paradigm of healing with a seven-story bed tower consisting of 150 private rooms.
The design also expands OR and radiological space with provisions for same-day surgery, and it reprograms the bed tower for an improved model of care that includes multiple nurse stations on each floor. Renovations include a new escalator and stair from the lobby area to the second floor, plus relocation of PACU to the first floor of the new tower. A larger main facility replaces the existing freestanding prep and holding area, improving operational efficiency with shared staff.
Visually, the variety of glasses used for cladding and fenestration creates harmony between the facility's mission and heritage. Internal blue accent panels in the glass-clad stair tower, for instance, express the hospital's commitment to openness, while multicolored fritted panels in the north concourse evokes stained glass
