Master planned and designed as a model of sustainability, George "Doc" Cavalliere Park served as a national pilot project for the Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES) program. A collaboration with Weddle Gilmore Architects, the innovative community park features multi-purpose synthetic turf fields, basketball courts, a shaded playground area, hiking trails, and gathering areas. All are designed with exceptional sensitivity to their Sonoran Desert environment.
The park design uses more than 4,000 stacked gabion baskets to create vertical retaining walls, which integrate the park into the existing desert landscape and topography. The resulting design provides regional floodplain protection - its retaining capacity is ample, at nearly 50 acre-feet.
A photovoltaic array of solar panels makes the park net-zero energy. Rainwater harvesting, reuse of onsite materials, low-maintenance natural finishes and furnishings, and a reconstructed desert riparian habitat also contribute to its ecological sustainability. As the first SITES-certified project in Arizona, the park represents another legacy design for the City of Scottsdale.
