The use of events venues to help universities compete is an essential part of campus planning and architecture in recent years. In this regard, among SmithGroupJJR’s noteworthy wins is the Events Center for Central Michigan University, an opportunistic and elegant conversion of a 1970s-era, utilitarian gymnasium into a 21st-century multiple-use events complex.

Yet the Events Center is designed for relevance to external audiences, as well as the entire student body, including performing arts, student activities and varsity athletics. Renovations include creating a new and memorable entrance, expanding to a 5,000-seat arena, and such major additions as a new lobby, concourses, and practice facility. The Club Lounge is a distinctive nook for meetings and alumni gatherings.

The additions and renovations contribute to a comprehensive experience, making the Events Center a lively and energetic destination. Only a year after its opening, more than 100,000 fans had already attended sports events there – and more than 10,000 prospective students had enjoyed the facility for a variety of experiences including concerts, student events and summer camp programs.
