Campus and Athletic Facility Design

Description

Northwestern’s Mid Campus Green will create a new pedestrian-friendly green space in the campus core. SmithGroupJJR is helping to meet the University’s goal for a safer, more connected pedestrian environment at this critical north-south campus juncture near the Allen Center. The design replaces two surface parking lots with new walkways, lighting, bicycle racks, and attractive open space and gathering areas – while also resolving vehicular access and conflict issues.

In other areas of the campus, SmithGroupJJR has been an integral member of the University's NCAA Division 1 outdoor athletic design team, designing venues for field hockey, football practice, softball, soccer and the three-time national champion women's lacrosse team. The facilities incorporate innovative synthetic turf design that has reduced water use, eliminated herbicide/fertilizer runoff, and provided substantial savings in construction and maintenance. These top-quality venues have also enhanced Northwestern’s athlete recruiting efforts and its Big Ten conference prominence.
