Auraria Higher Education Campus

Denver, Colorado

150 acres, 60 hectares

Architecture, Campus Planning, Landscape Architecture, Master Planning, Urban Planning and Design

Located in downtown Denver, Auraria is the state’s largest campus and is comprised of three separate institutions: Community College of Denver, Metropolitan State University of Denver, and the University of Colorado Denver. Auraria commissioned SmithGroupJJR and real estate firm Jones Lange LaSalle to develop a strategic implementation plan to more effectively advance previous master planning efforts. The result is a visionary path for managing campus development and change.

Every element of Auraria’s physical future was considered. The plan verifies campus buildable zones, capacity guidelines, and phasing. It also provides guidance on local and national trends in real estate and funding approaches, including public-private partnerships. Shared infrastructure initiatives are  vital to this collaborative, cost-effective plan, along with a shared vision for Auraria’s architectural and urban character. The plan defines a more urban, cohesive campus with a dynamic central open space to serve the campus and Denver community.
