Ambulatory Surgery and Imaging Center

“There has been a significant increase in patient satisfaction in all aspects of the care provided at the OSIS. It was designed to be patient friendly and it appears to have worked out just as planned.”

—Steve McKernan, Associate Vice President for Clinical Operations

Description

Set on a dramatic site on the campus edge with a sweeping, embracing entry sequence, this freestanding outpatient surgery center frames spectacular views of the Sandia Mountains. SmithGroupJR’s design offers patients many ways to enjoy the beautiful setting, taking advantage of building orientation, window placement, and a curving primary façade.

Inside, this patient-first approach continues. The mainly pediatric caseload is accommodated in six operating rooms, a pain clinic, and an imaging center. Special places are provided for children to take their minds off of their healthcare issues, including the children’s waiting area, prep zone and recovery rooms, as well as an outdoor play yard. Designed to improve the patient experience, the waiting areas feature small seating groups, garden spaces, and aquariums. Natural light enters in prep and recovery areas as well as surgical rooms.

To further ease the healthcare experience, the transition from waiting area to surgery is a direct entrance rather than passing through bed areas. Outside and in, this is a comforting, low-stress environment that limits cross-traffic between public and patient zones.
