“I always knew I wanted to build things and be connected with the outdoors,” says Patrick. He seems to have found an excellent fit as a landscape architect, combining his knowledge of horticulture and with his skills designing urban plazas, parks and academic environments. Patrick served as project manager for a number of projects at Loyola University in Chicago, including Loyola’s award-winning Lake Shore Campus. That project showcases the lovely Lake Michigan waterfront setting of the campus while protecting the lake’s water quality with innovative stormwater designs. Working with Loyola is especially rewarding, Patrick notes, thanks to the longstanding relationship between the university and SmithGroupJJR. “We get to observe the firm’s work being used and enjoyed by its target audience,” he says. Coming from an upbringing filled with competitive athletics, Patrick appreciates being part of the firm’s team environment and the legacy it carries.
