Michael Johnson

"I love cities, campuses and large-scale, complex problems. I've found my niche."

Michael likes to keep active--he bikes to the SmithGroupJJR Ann Arbor office almost every day and enjoys running, cycling, skiing and hiking with his wife. That's a good thing, considering his work as a landscape architect and his role as co-leader of the Urban Design Practice keep him on the move, too. "I'm hardly ever at my desk and spend almost as much of my time out of the office as in," he notes with enthusiasm. "I get to work on unique projects all over the world – from Honolulu to Cyprus – and interact with cool people along the way." Michael has received recognition as a finalist for international urban design competitions in Cleveland, British Columbia and Dallas. His greatest pride comes from the national award-winning master plan for the Indiana University-Bloomington campus. "Growing up, I always wanted to become an architect," recalls Michael, who says his true passion is design. When he discovered landscape architecture, it provided the perfect fit. "I love cities, campuses and large-scale, complex problems. I've found my niche."
