Merrill's path to urban planning and design has always been one of exploration. "I began by taking classes in everything I could possibly think of that interested me," she reveals. "I ended up studying architecture and, through mentorship and exciting work experiences, found my passion in urban design and planning. I love how naturally, organically, it came about." That process of discovery still delights her, now as leader of Washington, DC's urban design and planning studio. "I get excited when I'm challenged by a great project, when I know how I'm going to begin to create solutions and the answers gradually unfold as I dive deeper and deeper." Her work on major urban revitalization and transit-oriented development projects reflects Merrill's belief in the power of design to create great places and enrich the lives of the people who use them.
