The Dallas office of SmithGroupJJR is currently seeking a highly talented Design Principal with a passion for higher education and research lab design.  We have an opportunity for a thought leader that is an idea-driven visionary able to develop cutting-edge design concepts with a passion for great design.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manages design process for all studio projects; lead/directs the work of other designers and technical staff.
  • Defines program requirements and establishes design parameters based on client requirements and working with the project architect, project manager, and engineers.
  • Manages design team members during the implementation of design to ensure clarity and quality of concept is maintained through detail level.
  • Provides mentorship, guidance, leadership, and growth of designers within the office.
  • Monitors project budget and schedule related to design team efforts.
  • Manages client interaction and decision making relative to design.
  • Participates in business development activities, project pursuits and interviews.
  • Represents the firm in design presentations at national events and outside associations.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 15 years experience as an architectural designer.
  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Architecture or related field. 
  • LEED® Accreditation (or must be in the process of achieving); membership in professional organizations such as AIA desirable.
  • Registration as a licensed architect required.
  • Previous higher education and/or research lab design experience is required.
  • Advanced graphic and verbal presentation skills, including hand sketching required.
  • Must be resourceful and a strategic problem solver.
  • Strong commitment to design excellence and demonstrated high degree of creativity and entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to earn the respect of clients, team members, direct reports and others external to the firm.
  • Has the ability to lead large numbers of staff with a balance of design, technical schedule and cost factors.

SmithGroupJJR offers competitive compensation and an excellent benefit package, including 401(k) and continuing educational reimbursement. We offer 3 weeks of paid time off within the first year of employment, with the option of purchasing additional time off, and pay for 8 federal holidays. We also offer an alternative work schedule that provides employees with an additional 15 days off per year (usually Fridays) to help with work/life balance.
